The NVQ system

NVQ - National Vocational Qualification

This a framework that was introduced to enhance the standard of the vocational and technical courses in Sri Lanka. Different positions in the labour marked required different competencies to perform their job/duty. In this system, these competencies are pre-identified and then packaged into different units according to the category. This is done by experienced professionals in the relevant industry. A package of these units is known as the Qualification package.

The NVQ framework act as a seven-leveled qualification framework. according to,

1. the complexity of the process that a qualification holder will carry out
2. Learning demand (difficulty in the learning of those processes)
3. Responsibility of the job holder when relevant processes are carried out

several levels of qualifications (from certificate level to degree level) are awarded. As well as some pre-requisites like academic and professional qualifications are considered at the enrollment of each course. These pre-requisites are varied according to the package of qualification and the trade.
