What is an Operating System (OS)?
This is the most important software on a computer. Without an operating system, your computer is totally useless. It controls all the hardware and other application software on a computer. And the Operating system makes a way to you to communicate with the computer even you don't know how to speak the computer's language. (Machine language).
Suppose you as a computer operator. Then while you are working with the computer, you usually run different computer programs at the same time. Then each of these programs needs to access computer memory, central processing unit, storage similarly. The operating system manages all of this to make sure each program gets what they need.
Types of operating systems
Usually, operating systems are pre-loaded in most computers you buy. however, it is possible to change or upgrade it according to your preference. Not only the computer, but most of the electronic devices today come with an operating system such as smartphones, smart TVs, wearable devices, and many other consumer electronics...etc. Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, Linux, Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry OS are some common examples of operating systems.
The first electronic computer was introduced in the 1940s. However, in this generation, there was no operating system. These computers were used to perform simple math calculations and they didn't require an operating system to do those things.
